Many people have this misconception about honey that it's the poop of honeybees, some also say that it's vomit cause it comes out of bees' mouths but neither of these two is actually true.
Poop is the waste product after the stomach digests the food and takes all the necessary nutrition for the body from it and then it excretes from the anal. right? Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth and sometimes nose and can be triggered by various factors acting on the nervous system.
Honey is none, neither poop nor vomit and why is that we need to understand how honeybees prepare honey in the first place
How honey bees make Honey:
Collection of raw material (nectar)
Worker Bees fly from one flower to another to collect nectar through their long tongue and to carry it back to the hive where it is going to be processed into honey they use a special sac known as a "honey stomach" and it is not just a normal stomach like ours.
Mixing with enzymes:
While the nector is in the honey stomach it gets mixed with enzymes produced by the bee's mouthparts. These enzymes break down the complex sugars into simpler sugars. Enzymes in bees' saliva and stomach convert sucrose which is the main sugar in nectar into glucose and fructose and these are the simple sugars easier to digest and store for little honeybees.
Sharing the nectar:
Back in the hive, these bees regurgitate the nectar with "nurse bees" who are younger and they chew and further pass nectar amongst themselves adding more enzymes to it hence they further break down the sugar.
The Dehydration Station:
After getting the correct composition and placing honey in a honeycomb bees will fan their wings with incredible speed to evaporate the excess water from nectar, thickening the mixture.
Sealing the Honey:
House Bees take over after honey reaches the right consistency to cap the honeycomb cells with a waxy lid, which creates an airtight seal that preserves honey.
Honey Bee digestive system:
As mentioned above the process of honey making has nothing to do with poop or vimit. But Bees also digest food and poop but their poop is not honey and they are very hygienic so, so they fly outside the hive to excrete waste and so, honey in the honeycomb remains clean.
Mid-Gut (The real Stomach):
Honeybees do have a normal stomach known as Ventriculus (mid-gut). It is the main site of nutrition absorption and digestion. but before this occurs the Honey stomach (Crop) and between these two there is proventriculus which is a one-way valve.
Bees' digestive system contains the mouth, Esophagus, Crop (honey stomach), proventriculus, ventriculus, intestine, rectum, and anus.
- Food gets chewed in the mouth.
- The esophagus transports the food to the Honey Stomach.
- Enzymes mixed with food in Crop (Honey Stomach) and stored for later digestion.
- When Crop is full some food enters from the proventriculus to the ventriculus.
- In the ventriculus, enzymes break down food, and nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.
- The remaining waste moves through the intestine and rectum.
- Waste exits the body through the anus.
So, while eating honey do not get foul thoughts okay?
Let's get one thing straight, honey is neither of these things neither poop nor vomit. Honey is made by honeybees through a complex process involving the collection of nectar, mixing it with enzymes in their honey stomachs, and passing it on to other bees for further processing before sealing it in honeycomb cells. The digestive system of bees is designed to keep honey clean, as they excrete waste outside the hive. So, when consuming honey, it's important to understand that it is not poop or vomit, but a nutritious and delicious food made by hard-working bees.
